Tribal Museum in Keylong in Lahaul and Spiti District of Himachal Pradesh

Bhasha was invited by the Department of Culture, Government of Himachal Pradesh, to design its Tribal Museum based at Keylong in Lahaul and Spiti District of Himachal Pradesh. Bhasha has successfully redesigned the Museum engaging the communities of Lahaul and Spiti, so that the Museum can evolve as an active community documentation and cultural centre.

The museum presents a kaleidoscopic view of the nature, life, history and culture of the entire Himalayan region through various objects of the material culture and the audio-visual mediums by making use of the latest gadgets of the display and information technology.

The museum is designed to showcase not only the history, religio-cultural heritage but also the contemporary scenario - the living style and natural grandeur of the Himalayan region. It is, therefore, a 'living' and dynamic institution, rather than only a collection of the material objects of the past, what in the archaeological parlance is termed as the 'antiquities'.

The museum is a people oriented institution. In order to involve the community in the designing of the Museum, Bhasha offered a two year Post Graduate Diploma in Himalayan Arts and Museology at Himachal Pradesh. It is planned in a holistic manner such that the common people of the area belonging to different walks of life, and the outsider alike may feel attached to it and benefited. It is conceptualised to become a hub of all the cultural activities related to the Himalayan region.

The Museum is open to all people, local and outsider, who may be interested in the conservation of the Himalayan environment and preservation of the material relics and cultural heritage of the Himalayan region.
